Common Roles & Activities

  • Marshalling: Guiding runners on run routes
  • Race Registration and Memento Distribution: Managing participant logistics at start and finish lines
  • Tailwalking: Supporting the last participants and encouraging a ‘party at the back’
  • Run Leading: Supporting pace groups on training nights
  • Coaching: Delivering technical skills sessions

Benefits of Club Volunteering

  • Community Support: Volunteering provides a way to gain skills, build community and support Ackworth Road Runners’ events.
  • Race Credits/Free Entry: Volunteers receive free entries to future races with some organisations (e.g., Jane Tomlinson’s Run For All events, like the Rob Burrow Marathon, which give a free entry to another race if you volunteer).

Rewards for Volunteering

By becoming a member of Ackworth Road Runners, there is an expectation that you’ll assist in the effective running and support of the club by volunteering. We can all do our bit through supporting events and through our club activities. It also makes the kARRma Llama very happy.

The committee supports a scheme to allow members to accumulate points for activities, and in return they’ll be rewarded. The reward for 2026/27 is to be entered into a special prize draw at the 2027 Awards Night.

The points system will run in tandem with the Grand Prix League dates. A minimum of 4 volunteer points are required to be entered into the draw, and the number of tickets will equate to the number of points accumulated over the year, to a maximum of 20 points.

The club will make every effort to record member volunteering activities, but the responsibility to monitor and evidence the accumulated points will be on the member.

General Criteria

  • Committee Member – 2 points (attending a minimum of 6 meetings per annum)
  • Committee Supporting Role – 2 points
  • Coach, Run Leader or Assistant – 1 point per quarter (supporting at least 3 sessions in a 3-month period)

Volunteer Criteria – Our Events

  • Club Handicap Races – 1 point
  • Nostell 10k – 1 point
  • Ken Bingley 10k – 1 point
  • Rob Burrow Marathon Water Station – 1 point
  • parkrun Club Takeovers – 1 point
  • ARR Hosted PECO Race – 1 point
  • ARR Hosted Yorkshire Vets Race – 1 point

Other Criteria

  • Helping committee members at Social Events – 1 point
  • Family Member/Friend Volunteering on behalf of a member who is running in the same event as a “Marshalling Mate” – 1 point
  • Special training/benchmarking events (e.g., Bleep Tests)
  • Other events to be determined by the Committee
